"I was Trying to Describe You to Someone" by Richard Brautigan, Revenge of the Lawn

I found this page scan on /r/books and was deeply moved by how natural and romantic it seemed. I don’t often read outside of the sci-fi / fantasy genre, but there is a lot to learn (as a reader and a writer) from all corners of the written world.

I was trying to describe you to someone a few days ago. You don’t look like any girl I’ve ever seen before… I finally ended up describing you as a movie I saw when I was a child…

…the movie showed Electricity like a young Greek god coming to the farmer to take away forever the dark ways of his life…

The writing makes me hold my breath. It is sweet and rambling, honest and heartfelt. It also resonates with me because I pull a similar trick in my writing: ending with a singular statement, hoping for it to carry enough meaning or speculation to drive an emotional response out of my readers.

Writing is an art. After reading this, I don’t see how you can deny it.
